Post & Beam Mantel Surround

Description

A full post-and-beam fireplace surround assembled from three Beam Series castings: the 78 inch Large Barn Beam as header over a mortised post and a plain post. The pieces are bracket-mounted to wall framing and can be spaced to suit different opening widths, with an optional filler-board kit and hearth boards to close the field between the legs. It is the brand’s answer to a reclaimed-timber surround that can sit within non-combustible clearances.

Product page lists 7 standard colors: Brown, Silver, Graphite, WhiteWash, Ebony, Espresso, Wheat; custom colors available (brochure shows Brown (BRN) and Silver (SLV)). Material: patented lightweight concrete, ‘A 3-piece surround based on hand hewn and mortised barn beams’, hand finished. Non-combustible per manufacturer: ‘ASTM E136-12 Standard Test Method for Behavior of Materials in a Vertical Tube Furnace of 750°C’; installation sheet (PDF) states ‘Non-Combustible ASTM E-136’. Clearance per the Post & Beam installation instructions (PDF): ‘Bottom of mantel should be a minimum of 6 inches above the glass trim of any unit 50K BTU’s or lower’ and ‘a minimum of 12 inches above the glass trim of any unit exceeding 50K BTU’s’. Mounting: one 3″ x 3″ x 72″ header bracket and four 2″ x 2″ x 48″ leg brackets screwed into a minimum of 5 wall studs (brackets ‘must be screwed to framing through wood or steel’), self-tapping and trim-head screws included, two people required for test fit and placement; optional Board Filler Kit and Hearth Boards are set in thinset over 1/4″ cement board and cut with a diamond blade. Board Filler Kit and Hearth Boards sold separately.

Magra Hearth — a Wisconsin maker of lightweight cast-concrete mantels, hearths and boards that look like reclaimed timber or chiseled stone but are non-combustible (ASTM E136), so they can sit closer to the fire than wood. Every piece is hand finished, so no two are exactly alike.
