Real rooms
The mantel that can sit close to the fire — in a room like yours.
Cast stone, concrete and steel do not burn, so their makers rate them to sit closer to the fire and lower under a television than wood can. These are real installations — from our customers’ homes and our showroom floor, and from the makers’ own rooms. Open any one to see every piece like it.

Non-combustible mantels are rated for tighter clearances than wood — Magra Hearth’s rule is 6 inches above the opening under 50,000 BTU. Your fireplace’s own manual governs, and we check it before we order.
Custom widths and heights, legs that stand outside the opening, shelves in stock lengths or cut to yours. Omega casts to a quarter-inch tolerance and draws it before it is made.
A non-combustible shelf shields the wall above the fire, so a TV can often sit lower than it could over a wood mantel; the fireplace manual sets the clearance and the TV maker sets a temperature limit, and we check both. Stoll’s steel shelves and Magra’s beams were designed for it.
Cast stone weighs 200 to 400 pounds a mantel; these are two-person installs on anchors in the studs or the masonry. We measure, order, deliver and set it.

Size it
Measure the opening. We draw the mantel.
Two numbers start every mantel: the width and the height of the opening. Enter yours, say what the fireplace is, and the drawing shows how high the shelf sits and how far it runs.

Your opening
Inside measurements, in inches. At the opening or the glass itself.
A first pass, not an order. The clearance figure is the mantel maker’s minimum; the fireplace’s own manual governs if it asks for more, and the shelf depth changes it. Nothing is ordered until we have measured it ourselves.

Design it
See it on a photo of your own fireplace.
Stoll’s free online visualizer puts a Stoll door or steel wall panels on a photo of your fireplace, or on a sample room, before anything is ordered. For cast stone and concrete we do it the older way: a straight-on photo, the maker’s drawing, and the samples on the wall in Downers Grove.
- Photograph the fireplaceStraight on, in daylight, with nothing in front of it.
- Upload and set the scaleDrag the photo in, follow the on-screen steps, outline the fireplace.

Materials & finishes
Four materials — three that never burn, and real wood.
Each maker works in its own material and finishes it by hand. Cast stone, concrete and steel sit close to the fire; a real wood shelf keeps the distance your fireplace’s manual asks for. The samples are on the wall in Downers Grove — judge the color there, not from a screen.

Questions
What people ask us about mantels.
Straight answers from the makers’ specifications and our own installs. Anything else — call or book a visit.
Can a mantel really sit closer to the fire than a wood one?
Yes, when it is non-combustible. Cast stone, cast concrete and steel do not burn, and their makers rate them for tighter clearances than a wood beam. Magra Hearth’s mounting instructions, for example, call for at least 6 inches between the top of the opening and the bottom of the mantel under 50,000 BTU, and 12 inches above that. Your fireplace’s own manual always wins if it says more, and we check both before anything is ordered.
Can I hang a television above it?
A non-combustible shelf shields the wall above the fire, which is why Stoll’s steel shelves and Magra’s concrete beams were designed to let a TV sit lower than a wood mantel would allow. The fireplace manual sets the heat clearance and the TV maker sets a temperature limit; a deeper shelf helps. We measure the wall and advise on the height before you buy the bracket.
How heavy are these, and who puts them up?
Heavier than they look. A cast stone mantel from Omega weighs roughly 200 to 400 pounds in pieces; a Magra concrete beam 60 to 150 pounds; Stoll’s steel shelves are the light ones. All are two-person installs on brackets or anchors fixed to the studs or the masonry. Our team measures, delivers and sets every piece we sell.
Will it work with my gas insert or a new gas fireplace?
Yes. A Stoll surround is made to size to cover the gap between an insert and the old opening. Omega’s picture-frame mantels are cast as one seamless frame around linear and full-view gas fireplaces. Whatever you choose, the insert keeps the vents and clearances its maker requires; we read the label before we quote.
What comes in stock sizes?
Magra Hearth shelves come in 4, 5 and 6 foot lengths. Omega’s Grandstock line is twenty standard cast stone mantels made for quick shipping. Everything else on this page is made to your opening: custom widths, heights and legs, and picture-frame mantels cut to your fireplace.
How long does it take?
Omega ships its standard Grandstock mantels within about ten business days; custom cast stone and picture-frame mantels take about six weeks to make plus shipping. Stoll’s custom steel takes four to six weeks. Magra’s stock lengths are usually the quickest. We give you the date with the quote and schedule the installation around it.
Can a mantel go outdoors?
Some can. Omega rates its cast stone mantels for indoor and outdoor use; Magra’s shelf mantels can go outside when the edges and screw heads are sealed the way their instructions describe; Stoll seals its steel shelves for outdoor rooms and makes aluminum shiplap for the same reason. Each product page on this site says which.
Will the finish match the sample exactly?
Close, not identical. Every piece is hand-finished, so the makers describe some variation in shade, texture and veining as normal — Magra says so on every page, and Omega expects it in cast stone. The samples are in the showroom; judge the color from them, not from a screen.
Do you sell real wood mantels too?
Yes. Lexington Hearth’s Commonwealth Collection and Architect Series are real wood shelves — Shaker, Federal and neoclassical profiles in Cherry, Luna, Honey Oak or unfinished — and each can be ordered as a full surround with legs. A wood mantel keeps the clearance to combustibles your fireplace manual lists, which is why the same maker casts its rustic beams in non-combustible Burncrete for the walls where a television or a hot gas fireplace sits close. We check the manual before either is ordered.
Can you match the stone or brick already on my wall?
Usually. Stone and brick veneer for the wall around the mantel is quoted per project, and for odd sizes, corners or curved walls we work with a custom fabricator. Bring a straight-on photo and the width and height of the opening, and we take it from there.
