Fireplace Store Serving Hinsdale, IL

Hinsdale is 8.1 miles from our showroom in Downers Grove, about 16 minutes by car. Most Hinsdale fireplaces are factory-built units from the 1970s and 1980s, and the job we do most in town is a gas insert sized to that exact opening. Bring a photo of the fireplace and the room and we can narrow 19 brands to two or three before you leave.

Why Hinsdale homes end up on our floor

The median Hinsdale home was built in 1979, and that one fact tells you what is probably in the wall — the plate on your own fireplace tells us for certain. Houses of that era came with a factory-made fireplace: a sheet-metal firebox in a wood-framed chase, with a metal chimney above it. They were never meant to last 47 years.

The fix is almost never a rebuild. A modern gas or wood insert is designed to slide into exactly that opening, and it is the single most common job we do in Hinsdale. It heats the room better than the original ever did, besides.

The median hides the other Hinsdale. The village was incorporated in 1873, and the Robbins Park Historic District is Queen Anne, Italianate, Craftsman and Colonial Revival: real masonry fireplaces with chimneys and mantels worth keeping. The teardowns that skew the median are the opposite: new houses with tall family rooms that want a wide linear gas fireplace in a stone or tile wall.

What we do for Hinsdale

  • Design and installation

Two Hinsdale jobs above all: a new direct-vent gas fireplace in the opening a worn 1970s unit leaves behind, and a linear unit roughed in for a new house on a teardown lot.

  • Gas inserts and gas logs

An insert sized to a Hinsdale factory-built opening is our most common job in the village; around Robbins Park it is usually a vented log set that keeps the mantel.

  • Chimney cleaning, inspection and repair

Cleaning and inspection on one visit, with a written report and photos, for the brick chimneys near downtown Hinsdale and the metal pipes in sided chases on the 1980s streets.

  • Doors, screens, mantels and surrounds

New glass doors for a factory-built unit whose originals no longer close tight, a screen for a Robbins Park brick opening, and a mantel or stone face for a new Hinsdale wall. Fireplace doors and mantels and surrounds for Hinsdale

  • Electric fireplaces

For the condos near the Hinsdale train station and for finished lower levels with no vent path: plug-in or hard-wired units, switched on in our showroom so you can judge the flame.

  • Service and repair

Cracked panels, a pilot that drops out, a remote that has quit, and a yearly check before the first cold night, on the units we sold and the ones that came with your Hinsdale house.

Getting to the showroom from Hinsdale

Hinsdale to the showroom is 8.1 miles, about 16 minutes in normal traffic: Route 83 south to 75th Street, then west a few miles to Lemont Road, or I-294 to I-55, off at Lemont Road and north to 75th. We are on that corner at 1202-B, with parking right outside the door, and no appointment is needed on any day we are open, Sunday afternoon included.

The first question we hear from Hinsdale is whether an old factory-built fireplace can take an insert, and the answer is printed inside it: a metal label just inside the opening, with the maker and model number. Photograph that, and measure the opening’s width, height and depth. With those three things we can tell you at the counter which inserts are approved for that firebox. The showroom consultation costs nothing, and the in-home estimate is free and written if you would rather we saw the house first.

Permits and inspections in Hinsdale

Hinsdale names fire features in its own published list of work that needs a permit, so a permit is pulled for this job and an inspection is scheduled. The Village of Hinsdale Community Development Department issues it; the department’s permit page has the details. Both parts are on us: we file the permit, book the inspection, meet the inspector, and hand you the signed-off card at the end.

Fireplace types we install

Hinsdale asks for gas inserts first, because most of the village’s fireplaces are factory-built boxes. Next come direct-vent gas fireplaces for a full replacement or a remodel, and wide linear gas fireplaces for the stone walls in the new houses. The streets around Robbins Park want vented gas log sets that keep the mantel, and the condos downtown take electric fireplaces. The inserts and direct-vent units come from makers such as Lopi, Fireplace Xtrordinair and Majestic, the glass walls from DaVinci, the log sets from RealFyre and the electric ones from Dimplex and Modern Flames, seven of the 19 brands we carry and install ourselves, each one hand-picked because it is reliable.

Questions we get from Hinsdale

Our Hinsdale house is from the late 1970s. What is actually behind the brick face?

Almost always a factory-built fireplace: a sheet-metal firebox in a wood-framed chase, a metal chimney above it and a thin brick face in front. Once the panels crack or the doors stop sealing, the fix is an insert made for that opening, usually a one-day job.

Can you still get parts for a 40-year-old factory-built unit?

Sometimes. Send us a photo of the label inside the firebox and we will check. Several of the makers behind Hinsdale’s 1970s and 1980s fireboxes have closed, and when the panels or the doors are no longer made, a new insert is the honest answer.

We have an original brick fireplace and mantel near Robbins Park. Can it take gas without spoiling the look?

Yes. A vented gas log set sits in the existing firebox and leaves the open hearth, the brick and the mantel exactly as they are. For real heat, a gas insert goes in behind a trim panel and the mantel still stays. Either way we inspect the flue first and pull the Hinsdale permit.

We are building new on a teardown lot in Hinsdale. When should the fireplace conversation happen?

Before the framing is finished. A direct-vent gas fireplace needs a gas line, a vent path and an opening framed to the unit’s own dimensions, and a linear unit in a stone wall needs the wall built around it. Bring the plans, pick the model, and we give your builder the rough-in sheet.

We are in a condo near the Hinsdale train station with no chimney. Is electric the only option we have?

Usually. A gas unit needs a gas line and a vent to the outside, which a condo association rarely allows through a shared wall. An electric fireplace hangs on the wall or builds in, plugs into an ordinary outlet, and the electric models on our floor are lit so you can see the flame first.

Do you convert a wood-burning fireplace to gas in Hinsdale?

Yes. A Fireplace Store and More converts wood-burning fireplaces to gas in Hinsdale and across the western suburbs of Chicago — a direct-vent gas insert or a vented gas log set fitted into the existing fireplace, installed and serviced by the store's own team from the showroom at 1202-B 75th Street, Downers Grove. Every conversion starts with a showroom visit or an in-home estimate.

Do you inspect and repair chimneys in Hinsdale?

Yes. Chimney inspections, cleaning, liners, caps, crowns, flashing and masonry repair, and new chimney installation in Hinsdale, by A Fireplace Store and More's own technicians from Downers Grove. Book a service visit online or call (630) 241-1919.
