Why Bolingbrook homes end up on our floor

Bolingbrook grew up in subdivisions, from the first streets of the 1960s to the newer neighborhoods on the west side, and nearly every one of those houses came with a builder-grade fireplace: a metal firebox behind a brick or tile face, wood-burning in the older homes and gas in the newer ones. The glass clouds, the fan gets loud, the pilot will not hold, and the maker has stopped making parts. That is the job we see most from Bolingbrook: a new direct-vent gas fireplace in the same opening.

The older wood-burning fireplaces with a real brick chimney take a gas insert or a vented gas log set well. Family-room additions and kitchen remodels bring us the linear gas fireplaces. Townhomes and condos, and Bolingbrook has plenty of both, usually mean electric: no gas line, no vent, and a flame you can judge on our floor, because those are the units we keep lit.

The masonry that goes with a fireplace is our work too: a cracked firebox, a chimney that lets water in, a brick face that needs tuckpointing.

What we do for Bolingbrook

  • Design and installation

Pulling a worn 1980s builder unit out of a Bolingbrook family room and setting a new direct-vent gas fireplace in the same opening, or framing a linear unit into a kitchen remodel, all with our own crew.

  • Gas inserts and gas logs

For the wood-burning fireplaces with a real brick chimney in the first subdivisions: an insert turns one into a sealed heater, a vented log set keeps the open fire with no wood to carry in.

  • Chimney cleaning, inspection and repair

The metal chimney behind a builder unit needs its chase cover and cap checked for rust and its pipe for gaps; the brick ones need caps, crowns, liners and tuckpointing, and cleaning and inspection happen together, with a written report.

  • Doors, screens, mantels and surrounds

A glass door and mesh screen sized to the builder’s opening, a wood or cast stone mantel where the house came with none, and a stone or tile face over a dated brick one.

  • Electric fireplaces

For Bolingbrook’s townhomes and condos, and for a bedroom or basement wall with no gas and no vent; set it on an outlet or have our crew wire it in, and see the electric models lit on our floor first.

  • Service and repair

Pilots that will not hold on a 25-year-old unit, ignition modules, blowers that rattle, remotes, cloudy glass, and a yearly clean and check before the cold, on any make.

Getting to the showroom from Bolingbrook

Take Route 53 north to 75th Street and turn right. Stay on 75th Street east through Woodridge, and the showroom is in Downers Grove near Lemont Road: about 10 miles and about 18 minutes from the center of Bolingbrook. From the tollway, take I-355 north from Boughton Road, leave it at 75th Street and go east. Look for the B on the door at 1202 75th Street; parking is right in front, and you can walk in any day we are open.

Bolingbrook callers usually start with the age of the unit: it came with the house, the maker may be gone, and the question is fix or replace. The plate behind the lower grille has the make and model, so photograph that, then the whole face, and measure the wall from corner to corner. That is enough for us to say whether the unit is worth repairing and which replacements drop into that opening. If you want us to see it first, the in-home estimate is free and written.

Permits and inspections in Bolingbrook

A new fireplace, a gas insert, a new gas line or a chimney liner in Bolingbrook needs a permit and an inspection from the Village of Bolingbrook Building Division. The application, the inspection date and the inspector’s walk-through are all our job. Doors, a screen or a mantel on their own usually need no permit; if your project sits in between, we check with the village before we write the estimate.

Fireplace types we install

In Bolingbrook the list starts with direct-vent gas fireplaces to replace builder units, then gas inserts and gas log sets for the brick fireplaces, then electric fireplaces for the townhomes and condos. Remodels bring the linear units; we also install wood-burning fireplaces and outdoor fireplaces for the patio. For a Bolingbrook replacement we usually quote Majestic and Lopi units first, with Fireplace Xtrordinair for the bigger openings, RealFyre for the log sets, Dimplex and Modern Flames for electric, and DaVinci for a custom glass wall — seven of the 19 brands we carry, each one hand-picked because it is reliable, all installed by us. Find my fireplace narrows it down from your phone, and gas or electric walks through that choice.

Questions we get from Bolingbrook

The maker of our 1990s builder fireplace is out of business. Can it still be fixed?

Often. Thermocouples, pilot assemblies, blowers and remotes are mostly standard parts, so a dead maker does not always mean a dead fireplace. A rusted firebox or crumbled panels with no replacements made is another matter, and then we show you the units that drop into the same opening.

Can you replace a 1970s builder fireplace without tearing out the wall?

Usually. The old firebox comes out through the front, the new direct-vent unit goes into the same framed opening, the vent is run, and the brick or tile face goes back on or a new one goes over it. The wall stays where it is.

We are in a townhome off Boughton Road. Does the association get a say?

Often, over the vent cap on the outside wall or any change to the exterior. Tell us who to talk to and we handle that paperwork. If the association says no to a vent, an electric fireplace needs nothing on the outside of the building.

We want to turn the furnace down on cold nights. Which fireplace really heats a Bolingbrook family room?

A sealed one with a blower: a gas insert in a brick fireplace, or a direct-vent gas unit replacing the builder box. A vented log set in an open fireplace is for the look, because most of its heat goes up the flue. Both kinds are on display.

Do you take the old fireplace away, and what happens to the brick face?

We take the old unit and its vent pipe away. The face is your call: the original brick goes back, or we fit a new stone or tile face, a mantel or a full surround. If the wall will need drywall or paint after that, we say so at the estimate.

Do you convert a wood-burning fireplace to gas in Bolingbrook?

Yes. A Fireplace Store and More converts wood-burning fireplaces to gas in Bolingbrook and across the western suburbs of Chicago — a direct-vent gas insert or a vented gas log set fitted into the existing fireplace, installed and serviced by the store's own team from the showroom at 1202-B 75th Street, Downers Grove. Every conversion starts with a showroom visit or an in-home estimate.

Do you inspect and repair chimneys in Bolingbrook?

Yes. Chimney inspections, cleaning, liners, caps, crowns, flashing and masonry repair, and new chimney installation in Bolingbrook, by A Fireplace Store and More's own technicians from Downers Grove. Book a service visit online or call (630) 241-1919.
