Real rooms
It closes the biggest hole in the house — and finishes the fireplace.
An open fireplace is an open window. A fitted door stops the draft when the fire is out, keeps sparks where they belong, and gives the fireplace a finished face. These are real installations — from our customers’ homes and our showroom floor, and from the makers’ own rooms. Open any one to see every door like it.

With the doors closed and the damper shut, warm room air stops going up the chimney when the fire is out. It is the first reason people add a door.
Mesh doors, or a mesh curtain behind the glass, catch sparks and rolling embers while the fire burns. Glass doors stay open during a wood fire unless the glass is rated for closed-door use.
A refacing door covers a dated brass or builder-grade front without demolition. The new frame mounts over the old face, most of them with magnets.
Frame shape, finish, glass tint and handles are chosen to suit the room. Dozens of finishes across four makers, from textured black to satin brass.

Start with these
Traditional. The door that belongs on a masonry fireplace.
A rectangular or arched frame with bi-fold or cabinet glass doors and mesh behind them — the classic fitted door for brick and stone. Every maker on this page builds one, in dozens of finishes. 49 doors from Stoll, Design Specialties and Ironhaus, for every kind of fireplace — rectangle, arch and corner shapes.
Transitional. Cleaner lines, warmer finishes.
A simpler frame than the traditional door, with less trim and a finish that suits a painted mantel or a lighter room. For a house that is neither period nor modern. 18 doors from Design Specialties and Ironhaus, for masonry and factory-built fireplaces — rectangle, arch and corner shapes.
Modern. Thin frames, all glass.
The least frame and the most fire: slim steel edges, full-view glass hung on the hinges, and finishes from matte black to brushed stainless. Grey or bronze glass hides the firebox when the fire is out. 22 doors from Stoll, Design Specialties and Ironhaus, for masonry, factory-built and outdoor fireplaces — rectangle, arch and corner shapes.
Rustic and forged. Hammered iron, by hand.
Bar steel worked at the forge, hammered edges and hand-made handles, in natural iron and aged finishes. For a stone fireplace, a cabin, or a room with heavy timber. 11 doors from Stoll and Ironhaus, for masonry, factory-built and gas & electric fireplaces — rectangle, arch and corner shapes.
Sliding and pocket. Doors that disappear.
Glass panels that slide across the opening on a track, or pocket into the surround, so nothing swings out into the room. Built to the fireplace, one panel or two. 4 doors from Stoll and Ironhaus, for masonry and factory-built fireplaces — rectangle and arch shapes.
Sealed. A gasketed door that stops the draft.
Gaskets seal the glass to the frame and the frame to the face of the fireplace. Built for closed-door use on a masonry fireplace, per the maker — the door for a drafty chimney. 3 doors from Wilkening Fireplace, for masonry fireplaces — rectangle, arch and corner shapes.

Measure
Measure the opening. We draw the door.
Two numbers start every door: the width and the height of the opening. Enter yours and watch the frame take shape, to scale, on a real stone fireplace.
opening, inches
frame on the face
fireplace
- Widthinside edge to inside edge of the opening
- Heighthearth or firebox floor to the top of the opening
- Archheight at the center and at the sides, if the top curves
- The facebrick, stone, tile or marble, and how flat it is
Your opening
Inside measurements, in inches. Corner to corner, at the opening itself.
A 36 by 28 opening takes a standard-proportion door; the frame sits about an inch onto the face all round.
A first pass, not an order. Frame overlap, hinge side, hearth depth and the face material all get checked when we measure. Nothing is built until we have measured it ourselves.

- Spark guards and glass screensSized to the opening, they stand at the face and lift away for tending the fire.

Questions
What people ask us about fireplace doors.
Straight answers from the makers’ specifications and our own installs. Anything else — call or book a visit.
Do I need a door if the fireplace already has a damper?
Most dampers leak, and many are left open by mistake. A fitted door stops the draft at the face of the fireplace and adds a barrier for sparks. A closed damper and a closed door together work best.
Can I leave the glass doors closed while a fire burns?
With ordinary tempered glass, no: the doors stay open while a wood fire burns, with the mesh closed. Doors built with ceramic glass rated for closed-door use, and sealed doors built for it, can stay closed. The maker’s rating decides, and we tell you which you are getting before you order.
Will a door fit my factory-built (prefab) fireplace?
Yes, as long as it is built for it. Zero-clearance doors are made for each fireplace brand, with the airflow the firebox needs to stay safe. We read the label inside the firebox before we quote, and we never fit a masonry door to a metal firebox.
Can you cover my old brass doors without tearing anything out?
Yes. Refacing doors and fronts mount over the old face, most of them with strong magnets, and cover the louvers and the brass trim. The old firebox stays; only the face changes.
How do I measure my fireplace?
Measure the width and the height of the opening, corner to corner, in inches. Note what the face is made of — brick, stone, tile or marble — and how deep the hearth is in front. A straight-on photo helps. We take our own measurements before anything is ordered.
My fireplace is arched, or in a corner. Can you do that?
Yes. True arches, arch conversions for a rectangular opening, corner units and see-through fireplaces are all custom-built. We make a template where the shape calls for it.
How long does a door take?
Stock-size Essentials doors from Design Specialties ship in about two days. Most custom doors take about four to six weeks from the maker, sometimes longer for hand-forged or unusual shapes. We give you the date with the quote and schedule the installation around it.
Do you install the door?
Yes. The same team measures, orders, installs and seals the door to the face. If the fireplace or the chimney needs work first, we tell you before you buy.
What about an outdoor fireplace?
Outdoors, choose an aluminum or stainless-steel door so it will not rust: Stoll’s Legacy aluminum line and Design Specialties’ stainless Outdoor Collection are built for it.
