Chimney cleaning and fireplace repair in Downers Grove, IL.
We are the chimney crew and the fireplace technicians who live here. The shop is at 1202-B 75th Street, at Lemont Road, so a Downers Grove call is a trip across town, not a day on the road. The flue is swept and inspected, the gas fireplace serviced by the same people, and you keep a written report with photos.

The home-town look
Why a Downers Grove chimney and fireplace get a yearly look
Downers Grove has every kind of chimney because it has every kind of house. Near downtown and the Main Street station, the bungalows, foursquares and Sears catalog houses of the 1920s carry their first brick chimney: soft brick, lime mortar, a clay tile liner if one was ever put in, and a century of freeze and thaw. Rain finds the crown and the mortar joints, the frost opens them, and each winter takes a little more of the brick. Many of those fireplaces have not had a fire in years, and the flue above them has not had a look in longer.
South of 63rd Street and out toward 75th, the ranches, split-levels and colonials of the 1950s to the 1970s came with a factory-built fireplace: a metal firebox in a wood-framed chase with a metal flue inside it. That kind of chimney does not crumble, it rusts, the chase cover first and then the cap, while the firebox panels crack from the heat. The rebuilt lots between Ogden Avenue and 55th Street have a new unit and a new cover, sometimes set on in a hurry at the end of the build, and a gas fireplace that has never had its yearly service.
Inside the flue, a wood fire leaves creosote, and a chimney fire cracks the tile. Gas has its own habits: a vented log set or an insert in an old brick fireplace breathes through the old flue, and gas exhaust is wet enough to eat at mortar and liners a little each season. A blocked or crumbling vent can push carbon monoxide back into the house with no smoke to warn anyone. NFPA 211, the national standard for chimneys and vents, asks for an inspection every year no matter what you burn, and a gas fireplace wants its own yearly service for the same reason.
What one Downers Grove visit covers
Clean. Inspect. Report. Then the fireplace.
Clean
Drop cloths go down from the front door to the hearth, the opening is sealed, and a vacuum runs the whole time the brushes are in the flue. The smoke shelf and the firebox are cleaned, the damper is worked, and the cap and the crown are checked from the roof. Brick chimneys near the station, metal flues in the chases south of 63rd, wood stoves, gas fireplaces and inserts: the crew sweeps all of them, and on a rebuilt lot the new chase cover gets as close a look as an old crown.

Inspect
The chimney inspection is part of the same visit, never a separate appointment. Which of the three NFPA 211 levels your Downers Grove chimney needs depends on what has changed since the last one, and we tell you which before the ladder goes up.
- 1
Level 1: nothing has changedThe yearly look for a Downers Grove house with the same fireplace and the same fuel as last year: every part we can reach, from the firebox and damper to the flue, the cap, the crown and the brick outside.
- 2
Level 2: something hasGas logs or an insert going into the old fireplace, a chimney fire, storm damage, or a house near the station being sold. The camera goes up the whole flue and the report is written so the buyer and the inspector can read it.
- 3
Level 3: rare, and only with your say-soWhen the camera has found something serious and the only way to judge it is to open part of a wall or the chimney. We explain what we expect to find before anything is opened.
Report
Before we leave you have a written report with photos of what we found, sorted three ways. Because the shop is in town, a repair the report calls for is usually on the calendar within days, with the same crew. A straightforward cleaning with a Level 1 inspection is one price for the visit, and anything beyond it is quoted in writing first. Our chimney cleaning and maintenance guide explains the terms the report uses.

Fireplace
The people who sweep the flue are the technicians who fix the fireplace, and in Downers Grove they can be at your door the same week you call. Every make of gas, wood and pellet fireplace, insert and stove, the brands on our floor and the ones we do not carry, with one exception: electric units we did not install ourselves.
- 1
Will not light, or lights and drops outOn a standing-pilot unit that is usually the pilot assembly, the thermocouple or the thermopile; on electronic ignition, the module, the electrode or the battery backup. We tell you which before a part is replaced.
- 2
The yearly gas fireplace serviceGlass off and cleaned, gasket checked, burner and pilot cleaned, logs and embers reset to the maker’s drawing, the thermopile tested under load, remote and receiver batteries changed, the blower cleaned, the venting looked at, a carbon monoxide check at the unit.
- 3
Remotes, blowers and glassA remote that does nothing, a wall switch that works when the remote does not, a fan that rattles or will not start, a white film on the glass, a gasket that no longer seals: most are fixed on the first visit with the parts the van carries.
- 4
When repair stops making senseA builder unit whose maker has stopped making panels and glass gets a plain answer in writing: keep it, or put a new direct-vent fireplace or an insert in the same opening. The showroom on 75th Street is where you see the replacement at full size.
Seven things a Downers Grove house shows first
When to call us across town
Ring us if you notice any of these at your house in Downers Grove:
- 01Smoke curling into the room instead of up the flue
- 02A campfire smell in the living room on a humid July afternoon
- 03Black flakes on the smoke shelf, or a chip of clay tile lying in the firebox
- 04A white crust on the brick above the roofline, or brick faces popping off after a hard freeze
- 05A damper that will not close, or a cold draft from a fireplace nobody has used in years
- 06A gas fireplace that shuts itself off after a few minutes, or a pilot that keeps going out
- 07Twelve months or more since anyone looked at any of it
One of these on its own does not make the chimney unsafe. Any of them means it is time for someone to look, and in Downers Grove that someone is a few blocks away.
The people who clean it repair it
What we repair in Downers Grove
The crew that cleans your Downers Grove chimney is the crew that repairs it, and the technician who services the fireplace is on the same truck. The repairs below are the ones we do most in town.
Chimney repairs
On the 1920s brick chimneys near downtown the usual list is a new cap, a rebuilt crown, tuckpointing, and a stainless steel liner where the clay tiles are cracked or a new insert needs a smaller flue. On the ranches and split-levels south of 63rd it is chase covers, caps and cracked firebox panels; on the rebuilt lots, a chase cover that was never sealed. New dampers, including top-sealing ones, go in anywhere.
A new liner, a rebuild above the roof or a new gas line needs a permit from the village’s Community Development Department. We file it through the village’s online permit portal, set up the inspection and are on site when the inspector comes. Chimney installation and repair has the full list.
Fireplace repairs and service
Gas fireplaces, inserts and log sets of every make: pilot assemblies, thermocouples and thermopiles, ignition modules, valves, wall switches, remotes and receivers, blowers and their switches, glass, gaskets and refractory panels. Wood and pellet stoves and inserts: door and glass gaskets, firebrick, augers, igniters and controls. The patio gets covered too: burners and ignition on outdoor fireplaces, fire pits and gas grills.
When a unit is past repair, the same people install the replacement, and the showroom at 75th and Lemont has direct-vent fireplaces, inserts, log sets and doors at full size. Tell us the make and model from the rating plate behind the lower louver when you call and the likely parts come on the first trip. If you smell gas, do not book a visit: leave the house and call Nicor at 888-642-6748 or 911 from outside.
Scheduling, across town
Booking a visit from anywhere in Downers Grove
For chimney and fireplace work we come to you, and in Downers Grove that is a short drive from 75th and Lemont: north on Main Street reaches the station streets in about ten minutes, and 75th, 63rd and Ogden reach the rest of town. Call (630) 241‑1919 or book online, and tell us three things: what you burn, when the chimney was last cleaned, and which side of town you are on, so the right truck comes. For a gas fireplace that has stopped working, add the make and what changed, and we call you back within one business day with a time.
The first thing Downers Grove callers ask is whether the fireplace they inherited with the house can take gas. That is a camera question as much as a showroom question, and the visit answers it. When the answer is an insert or a log set, the showroom is at 1202-B 75th Street, unit B, with parking at the door; walk in any day we are open. Inserts, log sets and doors are there on the floor, with the electric ones lit.
Plain answers
What Downers Grove neighbors ask us
Our bungalow near the Main Street station has its original brick chimney. Can we use the fireplace?
Not until someone has looked inside it. A chimney from the 1920s may have a clay tile liner with open joints, or no liner at all, and either one lets heat reach the framing. The camera goes up the flue on the first visit. If the tile is cracked or missing, a stainless steel liner makes it a working chimney again without changing the brick you see from the street, and it takes an insert or a log set as easily as a wood fire.
The fireplace in our split-level south of 63rd has a metal box and a metal chimney. Do you clean those?
Yes, and they are most of what we see on that side of town. A factory-built fireplace has a metal flue inside a framed chase, and what fails is the chase cover on top, the cap and the firebox panels. We sweep the flue, check the panels and the cover, and if the maker of a fifty-year-old unit is gone, the report says whether it is worth keeping or whether an insert sized to the opening is the better answer.
Our gas fireplace lights, runs for a minute and goes out. Is that a chimney problem or a fireplace problem?
Almost always the fireplace. A flame that drops out after a minute is usually a thermocouple or thermopile that has aged out, sometimes a pilot assembly clogged with dust or a valve. The technician who comes to Downers Grove carries the common ones on the van, tests the part under load before replacing it, and checks the vent and the cap while the unit is open, because the two get looked at together on our visits.
You are in town. Do you come out for a single chimney or a single fireplace?
Yes. A cleaning and a Level 1 inspection take about an hour to an hour and a half, a gas fireplace service about an hour, and the drive is a few minutes for us, so a single call is a normal call. If the report finds a cap or a crown that needs work, or the fireplace needs a part we do not carry, the same people come back for it, usually within days.
We are selling our house in Downers Grove. What does the buyer’s inspector want from the chimney?
A Level 2 inspection: a camera run through the whole flue, a look at every part we can reach, and a written report with photos. Buyers and their inspectors can read it as it is, and if it calls for a liner or a crown, we can quote that work on the same visit and do it before closing.
How much does a chimney sweep cost in Downers Grove?
It depends on what is up there, and we tell you before we start. A straightforward cleaning with a Level 1 inspection is one price for the visit. A camera run for a sale or a change of fuel, a second flue, a gas fireplace service, or a cap or a crown that the report calls for is quoted separately, in writing, and nothing is done without your say-so. Call (630) 241-1919 with what you burn and when it was last cleaned, and you get the figure for your house on the phone.
