The fireplace you already have
Real fire in the fireplace you already have.
Most homes around us have an open masonry fireplace. A gas log set puts real fire in it without the wood, an insert turns it into a heater, the chimney above it wants a yearly look and, when its tiles have failed, a new liner. And where there is no chimney at all, a direct-vent fireplace goes through the wall. Pick a stop and the drawing shows what we do there.

Gas logs: vented for the look, vent-free for the heat.
A log set from Grand Canyon, Real Fyre, White Mountain Hearth or Hargrove sits on a burner in the firebox you already have: 146 looks, 12 to 120 inches. Vented burns with the damper open and looks like a wood fire. Vent-free is a heater that looks like a fire, keeps the heat in the room and can burn with the damper closed. We measure the firebox, size the set to it and install it.

A gas log set or a wood fire needs a sound flue. Our chimney team sweeps, inspects to the three levels of NFPA 211 and repairs what the inspection finds: liners, caps, crowns, flashing, tuckpointing, leaks. Masonry and factory-built chimneys, every make.

A new liner inside the old chimney.
When the clay tiles are cracked, missing or the wrong size for what burns below them, the fix is a stainless steel liner listed to UL 1777, run the full height of the flue: lowered from the roof, wrapped in insulation for its listing, joined to the smoke chamber or to the appliance it serves, and finished with a top plate and a new cap. The camera inspection is what decides it, and the report shows you the tiles.

- Stainless steel graded for the fuel it will carry, flexible or rigid, one length from the top plate to the smoke chamber
- Permit work in most of our towns; we file it and book the inspection
An insert turns the open fireplace into a heater.
A gas or wood insert is a sealed firebox that slides into the masonry opening, with a liner running up the old flue. It burns far more efficiently than an open fire and heats the room instead of the chimney; panels close the gap around it.

Direct vent: a real gas fire on a wall with no chimney.
A direct-vent fireplace is a sealed unit. The glass front is fixed, the fire takes its air from outside and sends its exhaust outside through a pipe inside a pipe, out through the wall behind it or up through the roof. No chimney, no room air, and the framed wall around it is built to the unit’s own clearances. Our own installers run the gas line and the vent, and the makers on our floor cover every size from a small bedroom unit to a linear fire the length of a wall.

- Sealed glass: no draft, no smell, no room air up a flue, and the heat stays in the house
- A remote, a wall switch or a thermostat; a blower moves the heat into the room
It will not light, the remote is dead, the flame is weak. We fix it.
